The DRC area, which focused on the Congo Basin, was first inhabited by Central African shredders about 90,000 years ago and reached about 3,000 years ago by Bantu expansion. In the west, the Kingdom of Congo ruled from the 14th to the 19th century around the mouth of the Congo. In the middle and in the east, the kingdoms of Luba and Lunda ruled from the 16th and 17th centuries to the 19th century.
In the 1870s, just before the start of the struggle for Africa, a European exploration of the Congo Basin was first conducted by Henry Morton Stanley under the patronage of Leopold II of Belgium. In 1885, Leopold formally acquired the rights to the Congo territory at the Berlin Conference and made the land his private property. During the Free State, its colonial military force, the Force Publique, forced the local population to produce rubber. From 1885 to 1908, millions of Congo died as a result of illness and exploitation. Despite initial restraint, Belgium officially annexed the Free State in 1908, which became known as the Belgian Congo.
